In Spanish, “ir” and “irse” look almost the same.
But be careful: the difference can change the whole meaning.
1. IR = to go (specific destination) Voy al cine. I go to the movies.
Mañana vamos a la playa. Tomorrow we’re going to the beach.
The focus is on where you go.
2. IRSE = to leave, to go away Me voy del cine. I’m leaving the movies.
Ella se fue de la playa. She left the beach
The focus is on where you’re leaving FROM.
3. VENIR = to come (towards the SPEAKER) ¿Vas a mi casa? No, vení a mi casa. Are you going to my place? No, come to my place.
Subtle difference: ir = away to another place / venir = towards the speaker.
Knowing when to use “ir” and when to use “irse” is one of the most common challenges for Spanish learners.
