If you want to start sounding more natural in Spanish — starting today —follow these 3 tips I always share with my students.

Don’t use unnecessary personal pronouns In Spanish, verbs already show who performs the action.

Yo fui… → sounds repetitive.

Fui al cine… → short and natural.

In Spanish, the verb already shows who performs the action (“fui” = I). Repeating the pronoun sounds redundant or unnatural.

Use natural filler words (“muletillas”) They make your Spanish sound spontaneous and real. The most used ones:

  • Ehhh… → when you need a second to think.
  • La cosa es que… → to introduce your point.
  • ¿No? / ¿Verdad? → to seek agreement. For example: “Hoy hace mucho calor, no?” (today it is hot, isn’t it?)

Avoid literal translations They’re easy traps! These are the natural ways to say them in Spanish: ❌Hacer decisiones → ✅Tomar decisiones

Esperar por ti /vos→ ✅Esperarte

Hace sentido → ✅Tiene sentido
